The celebration of the 22nd 'Day of Memory and Commitment' will be held in Grottammare.
For twenty-two years now "Libera Associations, Names and Numbers against the Mafias"celebrates, symbolically on the first day of spring, the "Day of Remembrance and Commitment" in memory of the victims of all mafias. For the second year running, an event will be organised in every Italian region, which will run parallel to the national event to be held this year in Locri (RC).
The venue chosen for the celebration in Le Marche is Grottammarea municipality that has recently been assigned, at the end of the confiscation procedure, a confiscated property located in Contrada San Francesco. This property, confiscated for gambling-related offences, was recently earmarked by a council resolution for disability rehabilitation projects. At a recent meeting held with Don Luigi Ciotti, the mayor, dr. Enrico Piergallinihe thanked Libera "for our journey together on the themes of legality and for helping us to look where we were previously not used to do so".
The day's programme includes the start of the procession, in which more than 1,500 students from all over the Marche region are expected to participate, at 10:00 a.m. from the station square. The procession will end at Piazza Kursaal where the reading of the names of the more than 900 Mafia victims is scheduled to begin at approximately 11.15 a.m. This will be followed by a speech by Dr. Paola Senesi, Libera's regional referent, who says about the initiative: "The Regional Coordination is absolutely satisfied with the work that has been done: as always, Libera has promoted an initiative that transversally involves the whole of civil society. For this, as always, we sought the collaboration and support of schools and associations and the response was unanimous and positive. We firmly believe in the educational value of the initiative and in the importance that memory, followed by concrete commitment, has for the fight against the Mafias.".
